INTERVIEW WITH FERENC VASASI (Oct - 2007)

How long have you been playing VTES?

Since 2001, i’ve started after Sabbat War came out.

What other games do you play?

EVE CCG, some board games (Arkham, Game of Thrones) and used to play many hours of online games, but got tired of it.

Congratulations on winning the 2007 EC Championship! You were 4th seat going into the finals with a Toreador Aching Beauty vote/bleed deck… What made you choose that deck?

In Hungary the meta game is extremely intercept heavy, so for a while now i’m trying to construct decks that are effective against blockers. Aching Beauty + Crocodile’s tongue is an obvious choise against these auspex bastards :)

If a deck is able to oust a blocker, it can oust anything imho.

You are in the highly ranked constructed player… what makes you successful in the tournament scene?

I’m usually lucky meta-game wise and with seating. The rest is just table-talk.

How do you build your decks? Crypt-first or Library-first? Start with a concept? Do you use any tools to build decks (i.e. Monger? ARDB? FELDB? DeckTemplate? Etc.)

I love star-vampire decks. If i see a nice vampire, i’ll try to make a deck around its special or its disciplines. So i would say concept with crypt first.
I’m using FELDB currently, now with card pictures it rocks!

How much do you think about the current meta-game in your area before building a deck? Does it affect your decision on what you play?

Absolutely. As i mentioned before, i always expect blockers, and try to build a deck, that is able to oust a blocker face to face. There is no or just very few s&b decks around currently, so bleed defense is not a first priority these days.

How do you like Lords of the Night? Any favorite new cards? Any cards that were too overpowered?

Best expansion since Bloodlines. Finally useful vamps and concepts for the independents.

Love Hide the Mind, Preternatural Strength and the new necro cards. I would not say overpowered but Ravnos and CHI got too much stealth and stealth like effects.

Are you ever going to build Blood Doll into new decks, now that Vessel is out there to hose them?

Yes. Vessel is not better, just different. Anyway i usually play bigcap vampires, so Minion Tap is my choise. :)

Favorite expansion to date? Least favorite expansion to date?

Bloodlines was absolutely the best so far. Tons of new cards, and concepts.
On the other hand, I still believe that NoR was a huge mistake.

Do you have a favorite clan? Why?

Harbringers. Not an easy clan to play (if you want to win), and necro users. Now with bleed potential (Trochomancy).

Is there a clan, a discipline, or style that you shy away from, decline to play, or simply don’t care for? If so, why?

I’ve never played Brujah or Tremere. Don’t know why, just never found any interesting idea for them. I don’t say i won’t play with them- never say never. :)

Do you own any VTES art?

Just the picture and the painting i’ve won at the EC. I got a "Danse Macabre" picture, and a painting by Damnans, which is a non-card artwork.

What VTES artwork would you love to have a print of?

The new Compel the Spirit is just awesome. Condemnation:Betrayed is my favourite, i loved to have it as big as possible.

What books are you currently reading, if any?

I have a Chile tourist guidebook with me and a spanish language course book, because we are travelling to Chile next year.

Beside that i’m reading the Dark Ages clan novels now.

Do you use a MAC or PC (or Linux)?

PC.

What do your spend money on, that you know you shouldn’t, but do anyway?

I’m buying just too many DVDs. Got a nice collection tho. No other bad habits.

I don’t watch TV, just movies. But I just got Heroes Season 1. :)

Favorite Alcoholic beverage?

Stella Artois - beer, beer, beer.

Favorite curse word?

Got many. Hungarian language is rich [in] such [a] way. :)

Ah, never had a pet with name. Just fishes.
